For over thirty years the country has been in a state of civil war and under the regimes of some of the worst dictators in the history of mankind. Presenting themselves initially as "revolutionaries"or "agents of change", and quickly resorting to criminal acts of torture, disappearances, murder and extra-judicial executions in order to retain their grip on power. Over that period over a million people have been victims of this senseless violence and there is no end in sight

The Struggle that brought the National Resistance Movement to power had the potential to change this. However after almost twenty years in power, the present regime cannot be distinguished from its predecessors for its lack of vision, disrespect for opposing views, corruption, abuse of human rights and the list goes on and on. Its preoccupation with keeping itself in power is testimony to its dismal record and the need to sweep crimes and abuses under the carpet and keep them there. The only way that can be achieved is to establish life presidency.

"The economy, the economy, the economy stupid." The economy is in shambles and without a light at the end of the tunnel. When Mr.Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986 Uganda was the 15 th poorest country in the world and today it is ranked 7 th and if you have not guessed, it is the 3 rd most corrupt country in the world. A heavy debt burden and 40% annual donor budget support. A population of 25 million with 11 million having the capacity to engage in economic activity but only 2.3 million are known to have jobs. 2 million orphans and counting, from HIV/AIDS devastation. So much for "strategic challenges."

Ugandans should reject the temptation to use violence as the agent of change. It has been tried many times and it has not brought lasting peace or a modicum of sanity in the country's political life. Those who want to "liberate the people today" will not fare better than Mr.Milton Obote, Field Marshal Idi Amin, The Bakombozi of Mr. Julius Nyerere and his friends Milton Obote and the late Oyite Ojok, General Tito Okello and then General Yoweri Museveni. All this would be laughable were it not to be insufferable.

What then of Uganda's future? A potential failed state joining the likes of Somalia, Liberia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Sudan to mention but a few. A critical mass of people in Uganda who understand this has been reached. They are willing, eager and able with discipline and risk retention to stop the descent further into the bottomless pit. The time for action is NOW. Change is INEVITABLE.
